Watching Birds Watch & Sing

April 9, 2018

If I stand quite still when I watch birds, I catch them singing. Move slightly, and off they fly. I watched a mockingbird shift from a wary guarded stance to lifting up his head in loud song.

I started this piece by collaging beautiful papers from a Chinese workbook. I loved the papers as they looked  untouched, so I added the birds with the lightest of color. I slowly glazed layers on until the birds sat loose among the characters.

Other media include watercolor pencils, gessos, watercolor and acrylic paint, and acrylic varnishes.
