Paintings follow fashion, fashion follows paintings. Every year trendsetters herald a series of "new" colors to watch for in clothes and home decor. The Spring 2018 color-of-year PANTONE 16-5533 Arcadia is a jewel tone color hinting at cool blue undertones.
I started this painting very early in the year, dreaming of Spring while the snow piled up outside my studio window. I wanted to create a piece (or three) which explored the many variations of green. When I investigated the new 2018 color palettes, I was surprised to see this beautiful green. Arcadia which was already featured in my work.
The multifaceted nature of green challenges even an experienced designer or painter. Mix yellow with blue to make green, we are taught in elementary school. Are we looking at the warm yellow of a sunflower that borders on orange or thinking of the cool yellow of a lemon? Is the blue in our paintbox the cobalt blue of the sky, or the violet blue of ultramarine? if you want olive green you can mix a warm yellow with a cobalt blue, but if you desire a clean kelly green, you are going to want to start with a cool lemon yellow.
A lemon yellow wash establishes the foundation for The beautiful Invitation of Green painting. Once dry I began to layer various blues, cool thalo to warm cobalt to create the greens. I lightened the high horizon line with transparent whites to give the illusion of distance and lifting fog. I stayed away from warm cadmium yellows for this piece to give the feeling of a cool morning.
Many paint layers, most of them transparent, guide the eye around the color fields of this 30"x40" acrylic painting. I invite you to email me if you would like to see it in person.
